An ‘enthusiastic Tory’, Lewisham was briefly a Derbyite MP for South Staffordshire before succeeding his father as 5th earl of Dartmouth in 1853. Rich from mining revenues on his Black Country estates, Lord Dartmouth remained a prominent figure in Staffordshire Conservatism.
