Biography

For some years before he came of age, Viscount Caher’s father, a representative peer who obtained an earldom in 1816, had been preparing to put him up for the county with government support. He headed the poll in 1818, after pledging himself to support Catholic relief, being the first government supporter returned for Tipperary since 1806. His family’s exertions and expenditure were ill rewarded by the sudden death of his father at the age of 43 in January 1819, which sent him up to the Lords only a fortnight after Parliament had met. He died 22 June 1858.
