Biography

In 1754 Lloyd contested Maldon, which his father had represented since 1747, but was defeated. When in 1756 Sir Richard was replaced as solicitor-general by Charles Yorke, he tried to secure as compensation a seat at one of the Boards for his son. But Newcastle wrote to Hardwicke on 10 Oct.:2 ‘A young man, not in the House of Commons, cannot well have a House of Commons place.’ In 1759 Newcastle recommended Lloyd to succeed his father at Totnes, and he was returned again in 1761 after a contest.

In 1761 he received Newcastle’s whip through James West and was classed by Bute as ‘Newcastle’; but in December 1762 he was included in Henry Fox’s list of Members favourable to the peace preliminaries. He does not appear in any division list for this Parliament, and in Newcastle’s list of March 1767 was classed as ‘doubtful or absent’. He did not stand in 1768.

He died 27 Apr. 1810.
