Biography
Descended from an ancient and royalist Warwickshire family, Holte inherited an estate of ‘not less than £4,000 per annum’. On coming of age he stood as a Tory for Lichfield, where he had cultivated an interest by purchasing the market tolls for £400 for the benefit of the city and contributing £100 to a new market house.1 Returned unopposed, he consistently voted against the Government. In 1747 he was defeated, subsequently leading a Birmingham contingent to the Tory demonstration at Lichfield races.2 He never stood again, dying 8 Apr. 1770.
