Biography

Halford’s ancestor purchased the manor of Wistow in 1603. His great-grandfather, who had been created a baronet in 1641, was a Royalist in the Civil War, and compounded at £2,000 on an estate valued at £1,800 p.a. Unlike his distant cousin, Sir William Halford of Welham, Halford did not support James II’s religious policy, and he was returned for the county as a Tory at the general election of 1689. According to Anthony Rowe he voted to agree with the Lords that the throne was not vacant; but he was otherwise completely inactive in the Convention. He was buried at Wistow on 30 May 1690, the only member of this branch of the family to enter Parliament.2
