Biography

This Member, returned for Bridgwater at a by-election occasioned by the death of Nicholas Halswell, has not been identified. As Bridgwater was throughout this period returning either residents of the borough or local gentlemen, it is probable that he was a Somerset man. In the church of Swell about 15 miles south-east of Bridgwater there is a plate in the chancel floor to one Toole (no christian name is given), who died 10 June 1583. Perhaps he was the Bridgwater MP.2
