Biography

One of the parliamentary seats for Carlisle during the reign of Elizabeth was commonly at the disposal of the warden of the west march, so Henry Scrope, son of one warden and brother of another had an obvious claim. As one of its representatives in 1601 he might have served on committees to strengthen the north parts (3 Dec.) and to regulate the government of the northern counties (14 Dec.). Almost nothing is known about him. From Venice in 1593 he sent to Horatio Palavicino a letter for the Earl of Essex ‘to be delivered with all haste’. The purpose of his visit to Italy is as obscure as the circumstances that prompted his brother to observe in 1597 that Henry ‘by this course that he takes, I fear me will be a man of no long life’. He died on 5 Oct. 1625, his will being proved on 7 Oct. that year. All his bequests, mainly of money from rents at Easby and Ewcott Grange in Whitby, Yorks., were to servants and godchildren. In a codicil he gave £5 to the poor of East Greenwich. He was buried there on 6 Oct. in the chancel of the parish church, where he had asked to be covered with a stone carved with his arms, ‘in all comely and decent manner’.
