Biography
It is not known how Newdigate obtained a seat for Grampound in 1597: he had no obvious patron who could have obtained it for him. He presumably owed his Buckingham seat in 1601 to Lord Hunsdon’s son, Sir George Carey. In this Parliament Newdigate was a member of the committee appointed on 3 Nov. to consider the order of business for the session. This is the only time he is mentioned in the proceedings of the House.
James I was a regular visitor at Hawnes. Newdigate died in debt in 1613, having conveyed lands to Alderman Cockaine, one of his creditors, and goods to another creditor, Dr. Newcome, as security. His indebtedness was possibly the result of standing surety for Sir Gervase Clifton, Lord Clifton. Nevertheless, he left his daughter Anne a marriage portion of £1,500. He must have remained on good terms with his brother-in-law (Sir) Martin Stutteville, whom he appointed one of the executors of his will. The family was, in 1668, included in a list of those who had left the county ‘within less than the space of fifty years’.
