Biography

Kestell’s family had been in possession of their estates some five miles from Bodmin since the thirteenth century, and at least one member of the family was town clerk there. Of Kestell himself little trace survives. He has no epitaph (though his arms are shown) on the family tomb in Egloshayle parish church, but there is one for his wife, giving her death as 7 May 1578. The tomb was ‘made by John Kestell of Trevegon in the year 1581’. Kestell’s first son and heir John married a daughter of John Vivian of Trelowarren, and had at least two sons.
