Biography

Fisher inherited estates in north-east Hampshire at Basingstoke, Hannington and Worting, his father’s property at Overton being left to his younger brothers. In 1562 he purchased the manor of Chilton Candover from Sir James Stumpe, making it his chief residence, and apparently ‘extirpating the inhabitants and pulling down the houses’ so that only a church and a farm remained. His local duchy of Lancaster post obtained him his one parliamentary seat. He died 11 July 1591 at Candover.
