Biography
Egerton, who performed the duties of his Exchequer post by a deputy, was elected to Parliament for Cheshire through the standing of his father, and was named to committees dealing with monopolies (10 Nov.) and poor law legislation (20 Dec.). As a knight of the shire he could have attended committees on enclosures (5 Nov.), the poor law (5, 22 Nov.), armour and weapons (8 Nov.), penal laws (8 Nov.), and the subsidy (15 Nov.). Towards the end of April 1599 he ‘served bravely’ with Essex in Ireland until, ambushed by the rebels, he was mortally wounded, dying 23 Aug. His body was brought to England and buried at Dodleston on 27 Sept. His funeral was attended by Sir Gelly Meyrick and Sir Henry Lindley, and. his father received letters of condolence from the Queen, Sir Robert Cecil, and the Earl of Essex, who wrote that he felt himself ‘dismembered’ on losing his friend.3
