Biography
Davies is known only for the part he played in three local lawsuits. In 1573 he led the opposition of seven Radnorshire parishes adjoining the forest of Radnor against alleged exactions of the Queen’s farmer in respect of the rates charged for pasturing cattle in the forest, and the denial to the inhabitants of their traditional rights of gathering fuel there. The suit was fought in the Exchequer, where fixed rates were settled by agreement. After his two spells in Parliament, Davies brought an action in the Star Chamber in 1587 against the bailiff of Radnor and others for preventing his election as bailiff by admitting non-residents into the council. In James I’s reign he brought a Star Chamber case against his son.
