Biography

The Catlyns came from London into Kent during the earlier part of the fifteenth century. In later years they owed their position in the county to connexions with the Roydon family and, through them, with the Twysdens. Catlyn himself acquired the whole of his father’s estate, including lands in Kent and Oxfordshire, partly on coming of age and partly on his mother’s second marriage in 1572. His eldest brother Valentine had been disinherited and the next two brothers, Hugh and Edmund, were to succeed only if George’s male issue failed. Later, on the distribution of the Roydon estates, George acquired the rest of his mother’s property. He was twice returned to Parliament for Rochester, some ten miles from West Malling, but he is unmentioned in the known proceedings of the House. He died 8 Feb. 1590 and was buried at West Malling. His will was proved at Rochester.2
