Biography

Candland signed the instrument of association on behalf of Ludlow in 1584. Five times Member of Parliament for the borough, his name does not occur in the journals, but the burgesses for Ludlow were included on a committee concerning Newport bridge, Monmouthshire on 29 Nov. 1597. In fact nothing of interest has been ascertained about Candland beyond the information contained in the will he made when he was ‘sick in body’ 15 Apr. 1617. He left two-thirds of his property in Ludlow and lands at Betton in Shropshire, and Beguildy in Radnor to his wife, with remainder to William Bevan and his wife Alice, the daughter of Candland’s dead brother Richard. The other third he left outright to the Bevans, whom he appointed executors, stipulating only that they should pay 20s. a year to the poor from the rent of a house in Ludlow. He died 12 Sept. 1617 and was buried in the south chapel of Ludlow parish church. The inscription on his tomb records that he was ‘then the eldest alderman of Ludlow and five times burgess for Parliament’.
