Biography

Of a family that moved from Devon to Lincolnshire in the sixteenth century, Bellow made one fortune through trade and another through speculating in monastic lands after he entered the service of Thomas Cromwell. During the Pilgrimage of Grace he was nearly murdered by a Lincolnshire mob.

At his first election to Parliament for Grimsby, Bellow agreed not to ask for any expenses, and in January 1559 he signed a bond to indemnify the corporation for his own costs and those of his prospective colleague, Harington, who in the event did not sit. Bellow died 6 June 1559. The heir, Sylvester, received livery of his lands in December 1561.
