Biography

Thomas Pycto may have been descended from the landed family of that name in Staffordshire, but his immediate antecedents were probably in Norfolk, where a man of this name was a member of the common council of Norwich from 1520 to 1524 and perhaps also surveyor of the streets there in 1545. If the surveyor was the Thomas Pycto whose will was proved at Norwich in 1548, another Thomas Pycto was admitted to the Norwich guild of St. George in 1550 or the following year, and had property (perhaps in right of his wife Alice) at Eccles, some ten miles from Thetford. In 1557 or 1558 he disposed of land near Thetford to Richard Fulmerston, treasurer to the 4th Duke of Norfolk. It was possibly this connexion that gained Pycto his seat; the duke and his agents were active patrons in East Anglian elections to the Parliament of 1558.
