Biography

William More was probably the son of Roger More, bailiff of Derby in 1520 and 1528. If the William More, draper and vintner, who in 1519 received protection in the retinue of Sir Richard Wingfield, deputy of Calais, belonged to the same family, it would help to identify his younger namesake as the supplier of ale to Thomas, 1st Earl of Rutland and of black cloth for the earl’s funeral in 1543. It was also probably More who with his widowed mother Joan acquired leases at Chaddesden and Spondon in Derbyshire in March 1551, to which he may have added lands in Fiskerton, Nottinghamshire. During the reign of Henry VIII he was involved in several lawsuits over property within Derby, among his opponents being the abbot of Burton-upon-Trent; and the destruction of a bridge in November 1554, when he was attending his first Parliament, was referred by him and his fellow-Member William Bainbridge to the Star Chamber. It is likely that this incident accounts for their absence from the House when it was called early in January 1555. For their dereliction the pair were informed against in the King’s bench during Easter term 1555. Their cases took the same course, an appearance in Michaelmas term 1556 being followed by judgment in Easter 1558 and a fine of 53s.4d. He was reelected with Bainbridge in 1563. More is last glimpsed in 1568 as the lessee with his son and namesake of three fulling mills and a corn mill in Derby.3
