Biography

John Chaloner probably came from the West Riding of Yorkshire, in his day a nursery of lawyers. After his earliest known appointment, as feoffee to a Surrey gentleman in January 1490, the only references found to him until 1508 relate to his membership of the West Riding and Lincolnshire commissions of the peace and other commissions in the north and in Wales. It was as legis peritus that on 7 Apr. 1508 he was elected recorder of London. He owed the appointment to royal intervention, and on the day after the election Edmund Dudley received £100 in ready money ‘delivered for John Chaloner, recorder of London, for the King’s most gracious favour showed him in that room’. In accordance with almost invariable custom he was elected on 19 Nov. 1509 as one of the City’s Members of Henry VIII’s first Parliament, but within a few months of its dissolution he informed the mayor that he was afflicted ‘with divers sickness and infirmities’ and asked leave to resign his office; he was succeeded as recorder by Richard Broke on 9 July 1510. It is not known how long Chaloner survived. He must have died between August 1510, when he was appointed one of Sir William Capell’s feoffees, and October 1515, when he was named among such of these as were dead. His inclusion in the West Riding commission of July 1514 may mean either that he was still alive or that his death had been overlooked, but his removal from that commission in the following October must have followed that event.4
