Biography

William probably came from the family living at Edburton, at the foot of the northern slope of the downs behind Shoreham, whose number included William Ede (c.1319-aft. 1379) and William Ede ‘the younger’. The latter, who acquired land at Edburton in 1376 and traded as a butcher, may even have been the same as he who later represented New Shoreham in Parliament.1

Ede acted as mainpernor for the appearance in the Parliament of 1395 of those elected for Midhurst. He may have been the William Ede, master of the Trinity of Hythe, who, when his ship was arrested for the King’s service at Dartmouth, ran out of provisions, and returned to Southampton for more. Because he was soon ready to rejoin the fleet off the Isle of Wight he received a pardon for his desertion, on 16 Jan. 1404.2
