Arnold’s father had been ‘custos bonorum’ at Dover in 1376-8, and a jurat subsequently.2 He himself witnessed deeds in the town between 1412 and 1437 and was engaged in lawsuits in the local courts from 1413. In July 1426 he was one of a group of townsmen who confirmed the lease of a chamber to the rector of St. Nicholas’s church. He is recorded in the 1430s as selling timber to the commonalty to repair its houses.
